HYMEN
HYMEN is the artistic name of Caroline Bliemel — and a space between observation and transformation.
My work moves between photography, analogue collage, theatre and design. At its centre is a fascination with fragments: things that have been torn, weathered, discarded, overlooked or removed from their original context — and with what becomes possible when we look at them again.
I began photographing urban surfaces in 2022, although my fascination with fragments and collage reaches much further back. In the streets, I discovered accidental compositions created by time, weather and human intervention: torn posters, faded paint, layers of paper, traces of glue, text and colour. What once carried a message gradually becomes something else.
I do not create these urban images. I find them.
Photography allows me to pause these fleeting moments of accidental composition before they disappear. I am interested in the tension between decay and beauty, order and chaos, recognition and abstraction.
My analogue collages take the process one step further. Here, fragments are no longer simply observed but cut, moved, layered and brought into new relationships. Found paper, images, words, colour and texture become material for compositions that remain open and in motion.
My background in theatre continues to influence the way I work. I learned to see spaces as stages, fragments as elements of a scene, and meaning as something that can shift through context. A gesture, an object or a piece of paper can become something entirely different when placed somewhere unexpected.
Chance is an important collaborator.
I am interested in what happens when control is loosened and fragments are allowed to encounter one another. Sometimes they form images; sometimes figures or words emerge; sometimes they remain abstract.
The name HYMEN reflects this interest in thresholds, fragility and ideas of purity and intactness. A thin membrane, a boundary, something both protective and vulnerable — a state between one thing and another.
Perhaps this is where my work ultimately resides:
between the found and the made,
between decay and becoming,
between chance and intention.
I invite the viewer to look beyond the obvious, to discover the poetry in what is usually overlooked, and to create their own connections within the image.

Based in Cologne, Germany, Caroline Bliemel works under the artistic name HYMEN. Her artistic practice moves between photography, analogue collage, theatre and design.
Her background in theatre arts continues to shape the way she approaches images, spaces and materials. She is interested in scenes, transitions, fragments and the shifting meanings that emerge when elements are taken out of their original context.
Since 2022, photography has become a central part of her practice, initially through her exploration of urban decay and the accidental compositions found on city surfaces. Her work has since expanded into analogue collage, where found materials are deliberately cut, layered and recombined.
Alongside her visual art, Bliemel is the founder of THE KEY – Salon der Metamorphosen, a multidisciplinary salon concept exploring transformation, identity, roles and new perspectives through artistic and theatrical approaches.
The two practices share an underlying fascination: what happens when something familiar is taken out of its usual context and becomes something else?
